Mistakes

 

Kelle just lost his wife when his children were taken away.  He was thrown into jail and held without bail.  Then, unable to go to work, he lost his business and his home.  Left with nothing, he was forced to use the public defender’s office.  He and his family were assured that the public defender’s office had all the same resources of a private attorney and would fight for his freedom.

 

The attorney assigned to his case did an excellent job with the limited resources that were available.  As the trial unfolded, it was very apparent that the DA’s office was working on a massive taxpayer budget.  The public defender simply has been overloaded with cases and did not have the same resources.  In addition, the DA in Riverside County has come under great scrutiny due to his heavy-handed practices of charging innocent people with crimes.*

 

In 1999, the DA was in the State Public Assembly and was reported as making the following statement: : "good prosecutors win their cases, but it takes a great prosecutor to put an innocent man in prison". **
